What Is the Sky Capsule Busan?

The Sky Capsule Busan, also known as Haeundae Sky Capsule, offers a unique way to experience the stunning coastline of Haeundae Beach. This scenic ride takes place in colourful, retro-looking capsules that fit up to four passengers.

These capsules travel along a 2.3-km section (1.4-mile section) of elevated railway track, approximately 7-10 metres (23-33 feet) above the ground.

The Busan Sky Capsule is a popular choice for couples.

As you glide along at a leisurely pace for about 30 minutes, you’ll have ample time to soak in the breathtaking panoramic views of the ocean and surrounding landscape.

The Sky Capsule is located in Haeundae Blueline Park and utilises a former railway track, the Donghae Nambu Line, for its route.

Did you know? Haeundae Blueline Park transformed the abandoned Donghae Nambu Railway Line into a scenic coastal park with walking trails, a cable car, and a beach train, opening in October 2020. This former railway, built in 1935 during the Japanese colonial period, once connected Busan to other coastal cities.

Sky Capsule vs Beach Train

Before discussing the ticket options and other practical information about Busan’s Sky Capsule, let’s learn more about the difference between Haeundae Sky Capsule Busan and the Haeundae Beach Train (often mistaken for the Sky Capsule).

How to Buy Tickets

You’ve got four options for getting Sky Capsule tickets at Haeundae Blueline Park:

Option 1: Book online via Klook – Recommended

Klook is our recommended option for buying Sky Capsule tickets in advance. We’ve found that prices on Klook are often lower than on the official website. The platform is intuitive to use and works well with international cards.

It’s also one of the most popular platforms for booking attractions across South Korea (and the rest of Asia), so it’s super convenient if you’re also booking other tickets for your South Korea trip.

Option 2: Book online via Trip.com

Trip.com is a reliable alternative if tickets on Klook are unavailable for any reason. It also accepts international cards and sometimes offers discounts. It’s worth comparing prices on both platforms to find the best deal.

Option 3: Book via the official website

You can book directly through the official website, but several travellers (including our readers) have had trouble using foreign cards. If you run into problems, Klook or Trip.com are better alternatives.

Option 4: Buy at the ticket office

If you’re hoping to grab a ticket on the day, you can try the on-site ticket office. But keep in mind that only a small number of tickets are available, and they often sell out in the morning (before noon).

Option 5: Join a Busan day tour

A Busan day tour is a great option if you’d like to see more in one day. Our recommended day tour has four package options, including two that feature the Sky Capsule ride.

Some also include top stops like Haedong Yonggungsa Temple, Gamcheon Culture Village, and Huinnyeoul Culture Village.

Operating Hours & Schedule

The Haeundae Sky Capsule operates at different times throughout the year. While the first train always starts at 9am, the departure time of the last train differs depending on the season.

Here’s the schedule for the last train (final boarding time):

  • Winter Season (November, December, January, February): last Sky Capsule around 6pm
  • Off-Season (March, April, October): last Sky Capsule around 6:30pm
  • High Season (May, June, September): last Sky Capsule around 7:30pm
  • Peak Season (July, August): last Sky Capsule around 8:30pm

Please note that the operating hours may change without notice depending on demand. The peak periods are weekends and holidays.

Return Options to Your Starting Station

The Sky Capsule only sells one-way tickets, so if you want to return to where you started, you’ve got three options:

  • Option 1: Walk back along the Busan Green Railway. This walking and cycling path stretches for 9.8 kilometres (6.1 miles). But don’t worry, you’d only need to walk about 2.3 kilometres (1.4 miles) to get back. It’s a great way to enjoy the views at your own pace.
  • Option 2: Take the Beach Train for a different experience. If you fancy a mix of perspectives, ride the Sky Capsule one way and take the Beach Train the other. This way, you get the panoramic views from above and a relaxed train ride along the coast.
  • Option 3: Book two Sky Capsule tickets for a round trip. If you want the full Sky Capsule experience in both directions, simply purchase another ticket for the way back.

Our recommended return option: We found the Beach Train had a more limited view of the coastline compared to the Sky Capsule. If you want the best experience, we’d recommend walking back (option 1)!

Sky Capsule Ride: What’s the Experience like?

We absolutely loved our ride on the Haeundae Sky Capsule! It’s a very calming and unique experience. At first, we wondered if the ride would be too slow or too boring, but we loved the relaxed pace. The 30 minutes flew by!

You get incredible panoramic views of the Busan coastline. The ride feels very relaxed, almost like floating above the scenery.

The capsules themselves are very cute and surprisingly cosy. We were lucky enough to have an entire 4-seater capsule to ourselves (even though we only bought two tickets), making it even more special. They offer just the right amount of space to stretch out and relax.

Put on some music on your phone and soak in the beautiful coastal scenery. We also brought along some snacks and enjoyed them on our ride. At one point, we even saw a couple popping a bottle of bubbly – what a cute idea for a romantic date!

It’s no surprise that the Sky Capsule is all over social media. We highly recommend it!

How to Get There from Central Busan

If you’re not staying in the area near Haeundae Blue Line Park, you can reach the park from downtown Busan via public transportation:

  • Metro: It’s very easy to get Metro Line 2 (green line) to Jungdong metro station and walk to Mipo station in about 15 minutes.
  • Bus: Alternatively, take the 1003 Bus and get off when you reach Mipo, Moontan Road Entrance. It’s just a 6-minute walk to Mipo’s Sky Capsule station.

Our Top Tips: Things We Wish We Knew Before

Planning your trip to the Busan Sky Capsule? Here are our tips to help you make the most of your visit:

TIP #1: Book your tickets online at least a week before. Sky Capsule tickets come with a set time slot and can sell out fast! When we booked a week in advance, every slot from Mipo Station was already taken! So it’s best to book ahead, especially during peak seasons.

TIP #2: Try the ticket office for last-minute tickets. If online tickets are sold out, try your luck at the ticket office in the early morning, ideally around 9am. The tickets often sell out before noon.

TIP #3: Consider reverse travel during peak times. Most people travel from Mipo to Cheongsapo. During peak times (weekends/holidays), try Cheongsapo to Mipo for shorter queues.

TIP #4: For the best views, ride from Mipo to Cheongsapo. This direction puts you on the outer track, closest to the sea. The best seat? The right side (along the waterline), facing forward.

Mipo Station

TIP #5: Have backup payment options. If using a foreign card, bring multiple types (VISA, MasterCard, etc.) in case one isn’t accepted. Cash is also an option.

TIP #6: Think about your return trip in advance. Capsule tickets are one-way only. For a round trip, purchase one-way tickets for each leg. Allow enough time between trips, as you’ll need to get off and queue again for the return journey.

TIP #7: Go for sunset views. Book a slot 45-60 minutes before sunset for the best ocean views. But be warned: this is the most popular time, and tickets for these slots sell out first.

TIP #8: Don’t be late! Late arrivals (more than 30 minutes after the time slot) miss their tickets without a refund. We saw a couple who had to buy new tickets because they missed their window! Also, you can’t board early. You must wait for your slot to open.

TIP #9: Avoid weekends and holidays. Weekdays are less crowded than weekends and holidays. We visited during the week and scored a private 4-seater capsule while only paying for 2 tickets due to the short queue!

TIP #10: Skip the Beach Train. While there’s a combination ticket with the Busan Beach Train, we don’t recommend it. The capsule offers a better view of the coastline and a more unique experience. Our recommendation: Save the money for the Beach Train, walk one way, and take the capsule the other way.

TIP #11: Bring your camera. The Sky Capsule is packed with Instagram-worthy views! You can open the small windows at the sides of the capsule for glare-free photos or a refreshing breeze (especially if you visit during the summer heat).

TIP #12: Set the mood with music. There’s a wooden speaker inside the capsule, so queue up your favourite playlist and enjoy the ride.

TIP #13: Pack some snacks and drinks. A little treat makes the experience even more special!

TIP #14: Explore the area around Cheongsapo Train Station. Visit cafes, one of the many seafood restaurants (Busan is famous for its fresh seafood!), the Daritdol Observatory Skywalk, and the Twin Lighthouses. You can easily spend 1-3 hours here.
