We absolutely love the festive season! There’s something magical about twinkling Christmas lights and markets popping up all over the cities. Growing up in Germany, where Christmas markets originated, we visited many of the country’s 2,500+ holiday markets. Since then, we’ve explored Christmas markets worldwide, from Brussels and Singapore to New York City.

Now based in London, we continue to explore new Christmas destinations every year. While we adore London as a global Christmas hotspot, we’ve discovered many other fantastic Christmas markets across the UK. Birmingham captured our attention with its impressive festive atmosphere and renowned Christmas markets.

In this post, we share our selection of the best Birmingham Christmas markets and festive attractions for 2026,including the largest authentic German Christmas market outside of Germany and Austria.

While other Christmas events and markets are happening across the city, our list below features what we believe are the top highlights you won’t want to miss.

You’ll find an extensive variety of traditional Christmas market treats here. Sip on some tasty hot chocolate or indulge in a cup of Glühwein (mulled wine) or Weissbier (wheat beer). Oh, and try classic German treats like Stollen (Christmas cake), Bretzel (pretzel), and Bratwurst (sausage).

Next to the Christmas ice rink is the Big Wheel, which offers views of Birmingham.

Our top tip: For a better, free alternative to the Big Wheel, check out the Discovery Terrace at Birmingham Library. It provides panoramic views of the city from its garden terrace.

This 1.4-kilometre (almost a mile) trail features impressive light displays set to music, taking about 60-90 minutes to complete.

At the start of the trail, you’ll find food and hot drinks. Midway, you can enjoy toasted marshmallows and mulled wine.

The ideal time to visit Birmingham’s Christmas markets is mid-November to mid-December. This timing helps you avoid the last-minute holiday rush. 

Last year, Birmingham’s Christmas season followed this general timeline, and a similar schedule is expected for Christmas 2026:

• From 1st November 2025: The Frankfurt Christmas Market, Birmingham’s largest Christmas market, officially opens.
• From 7th November 2025: Enjoy the rest of Birmingham’s Christmas markets, including the Christmas in Cathedral Square Craft Market. This period also typically marks the start of Christmas theatre performances and concerts.
• From 28th November 2025: For the full festive experience, visit from this date onwards when the Luminate Winter Light Trail officially opens.

While exact dates for Christmas 2026 are still to be confirmed, this provides a helpful guide to when Birmingham’s festive attractions are most likely to be in full swing.

Birmingham surprised us. We'd visited expecting a decent German market and left genuinely impressed by how much the city packs into its festive season.

The Frankfurt Christmas Market alone is worth the trip, but it's the combination of the light trail, the cathedral square, and the theatre options that makes it feel like a proper Christmas destination rather than a one-trick market town.
